(National Wildlife Area)
The Sululiiit Area Co-Management Committee (Sululiit ACMC) is based in Qikiqtarjuaq, Qikiqtaaluk Region. The Sululiit ACMC is comprised of 5 members from the community and one staff from the Canadian Wildlife Service. The ACMC is responsible for managing the Akpait and Qaqulluit National Wildlife Areas (NWAs), which are located about 100 km away from Qikiqtarjuaq. Through its role, the ACMC is in charge of developing the management plans for the two NWAs, reviewing permit applications for access to Akpait and Qaqulluit as well as advising the Minister on all aspects related to these protected areas.
Created in 2010, Akpait and Qaqulluit NWAs protect the nesting cliffs of colonial seabirds as well as their joint and larger marine waters extending to the territorial sea limit. The marine rich waters provide essential feeding grounds for nesting seabirds between April and October each year, in addition to supporting a variety of marine mammals including different types of seals, polar bears and various whale species.
Located 30 km apart, together Akpait and Qaqulluit represent one of the most important seabird area in the eastern Canadian Arctic, supporting more than 500,000 marine birds during the summer.
The Qaqulluit NWA hosts the largest colony of northern fulmars, equivalent to 20% of the Canadian population (about 27,000 pairs). Qaqulluit is the Inuktitut word for “fulmars”. Other nesting birds found in smaller numbers at Qaqulluit include black guillemots, glaucous and Iceland gulls.
