ASUNGASUNGAAT
(Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary)
The Asungasugnaat Area Co-Management Committee (Asungasugnaat ACMC) oversees the Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary in the Qiqiktaaluk Region. The Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary was created with the express purpose of protecting the nesting grounds of thick-billed murres, black-legged kittiwakes and greater snow geese. The Asungasugnaat ACMC was created in 2013 and is made up of five members from Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik) and one Canadian Wildlife Service Northern Region (Iqaluit) employee. The Asungasugnaat ACMC is working on writing the Management Plan for the Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary and meets 1-2 times per year to discuss management of, and permitting for access to, the Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Our ACMC is based in Pond Inlet, NU, within view of the Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Our members have a great deal of experience in travelling on the land and harvesting wildlife in the area of Bylot Island MBS, and we share a deep interest in contributing to the management of the area.
